Joe was up and ready to go before 6 this morning. Unfortunately, it was still raining in Iowa. Joe ended up leaving at 8 am. Honestly, that was a little late for me, the person not biking in the rain, because I was concerned about all the heat advisories today. But you can’t argue with mother nature or your husband biking across the US.
As a biker across the Midwest the cornfields across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois… they all begin to look the same.
Joe followed the Mississippi River Trail (MRT) to Davenport, Iowa. Joe said it was a good trail. However, there was a lot of water on the road and if the Mississippi had been any higher, he thinks it may have flooded. I’d be curious to see how the trail is after Tuesday when the flood stage is reached.
Joe navigated through Davenport, got lost once as Garmin was confused about a path, but was able to say hello to a couple permanent/temporary campers twice and they were happy to see him both times.
On the way over the Mississippi River, he traveled on a metal deck bridge and stopped to take a picture of the pelicans in front of a river barge. A guy came up to him and said that Joe may not want to stand there because he was standing on a swing bridge about to let a barge through. Those pelicans are kind of cool to see though!
He was taking the bike trail in Davenport and happened across a BNSF depot!
Joe’s friend and guide, Garmin, only gave a U-turn once today and it was in Davenport, IA. But also, at one point Garmin told him to take cobblestoned 12th street for a mile. “Bill- it sucked! Who builds roads out of brick? “
As for me and Neptune- we woke up, packed up, took a walk. There were some interesting rock sculptures of a toad and turtle at our campgrounds. We had a nice drive to Atkinson Motorsports RV Park. It is a quiet (it’s a Monday) RV park with access to many ATV trails around here. But I imagine it gets a bit louder on the weekends. I backed into our spot on my own and just as I was settling in, Joe arrived. Perfect timing. They also have tent sites and have hosted many tent bikers in the past.
It is still very hot here, as it is back home, so no long walks with the dog today. He seems perfectly happy to have a quiet evening. Joe was happy to experience a nice ride after 2 days off and we’re ready to keep moving east. We’re now into Illinois, another state, officially today. Still hot and 70+ miles to travel tomorrow.
We are thinking of all the people back home and hope you are staying cool and safe. <3
