We woke up to sunshine and continued heat and humidity. Joe and Neptune took a walk early this morning about 6:30 and it was already hot. The three of us went walking later on in the morning next to the Mississippi River and got a picture of one of the many barges we saw working today.
We settled Neptune in his air-conditioned home before heading to Muscatine, IA for a few hours. We’d heard about a sculpture there that we wanted to check out. As we were getting close to town there was a sign for the Mark Twain Overlook. Unfortunately, we took the left turn one street too late and ended up in Illinois. After a quick U-turn we got ourselves back to Iowa. Illinois isn’t until tomorrow! The overlook was a good place to stop and get a look at the city and the Mississippi River and all the activity around it.
We made it to our original stop – The Worlds Largest Watermelon Sculpture! How can you not stop and take that photo opportunity!?! The sculpture is part of a beautiful river walk. We were also able to take a couple photos of the train passing by.
We walked past the Pearl City Station and a sculpture dedicated to the pearl button workers of the once Pearl Button Capital of the World. We wanted to go to the National Pearl Button Museum, but unfortunately it was closed on Sundays. Joe got some pictures of the pearl buttons and the mussel shells that were taken from the Mississippi River to create the pearl buttons. The history of pearl buttons, Muscatine, IA and the process from river clam to button is very interesting.
We weren’t able to walk around the city as much as we wanted because of the heat. We drove around the historic neighborhood/area and marveled at the beautiful architecture and homes. The red brick one had a sign that there were furnished apartments available to rent. We thought that one was a bit spooky as well as looking like it had a questionable maintenance history. We did make it to a local brewery, Contrary Brewing Company, for beers and snacks. Our T-shirts and shorts did not compare to some of the other folks in the bar.
We had a rest after we got back, and Neptune became a lap dog. And then Joe had to fix the main control panel. Things were working, not working, alerting, not alerting. Maybe it’s the heat.
Back to the usual routine tomorrow. We’ll be headed to Illinois, officially this time. One more state closer to the finish!
Thank you everyone for checking in. We are still enjoying our adventure and are thankful for all of you! Stay cool!
