Today was a total wash out. For bike riding that is. The forecast for this morning until 1pm was showers and thunderstorms. And it is still sooooo humid! Joe made the reluctant decision not to ride his bike today and instead drove the RV to the next stop.
For me it was nice to have Joe around packing up this morning. I got to spend a morning with him. We haven’t done that in a while, and I loved it. He was also kind enough to let me review my checklist frequently. As we headed out of the RV site we came across a group of goats doing goat things. Are they the GOAT???
We noticed fewer corn fields and more woods and trees as we traveled south today. If you ever get a chance, you should travel down Eastern Iowa. It may change what you think Iowa looks like. It is not just flat farm fields, but hills and bluffs and small towns and interesting history and people.
As we got closer to the Mississippi River you could tell that there had been a lot of rain recently. We pulled into our spot at Shady Creek Recreation Area in Muscatine, IA about 1:30. We had a few hours of sunshine which warmed the temperature and increased the humidity. Neptune napped as much as he could today. Joe did a lot of work on planning his future bike rides, which will be very helpful going forward. We went for a walk around the campgrounds looking for a hiking area. The camp hosts said they received over 4 1/2 inches of rain in the last day and the hiking path is muddy and very buggy. We are right on the Mississippi River and it is beautiful and reminds us of home. There are tent sites here too and I think that it is a good idea to have the tent on a cement slab instead of in the fields today.
We watched the Canadian Pacific train go by and listened to the familiar sounds of the train. It, of course, did not sound as good or look as amazing as a BNSF train would have.
We received a river flood watch for our current location beginning Tuesday afternoon to Thursday morning. The Mississippi River was at 11+ feet this morning and flood stage is 13 feet. We added some pictures of the area around our campsite. We are on a cement slab so hopefully it won’t creep up any further. There are some pictures of the area around us when we arrived and what it looks like now. It is raining like crazy at the moment and we have another weather alert, which we added a picture of. We are very thankful to be in our cozy little RV and not in a tent tonight.
Tomorrow is a scheduled rest day so if the weather allows, we’ll be investigating the area of Muscatine, Iowa tomorrow.
