We are ½ way through Iowa after today’s ride. Today was another hot and muggy one with temps 70 -90 and humidity at 75%. When Joe left this morning there were fog alerts. And there were so many hills. “They just kept coming. Garmin said there were only 2 climbs. Garmin lied. Every time I turned around there was another hill”. About 5 miles from the end, he needed to take a gel pack to get the energy to finish. He drank all 6 bottles of water today. He also had the unmistakable aroma of cows as he traveled up and down the hilly humid roads.
We saw a lot of cornfields today among the hills of Iowa. Joe got a picture of a crop duster helicopter reloading, and I got a picture of a plane over the fields. Joe passed through the village of Petersburg and could not miss Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. It was built in 1904 and is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.
Next, he headed to Dyersville, IA where he stopped at a park to eat his lunch. One of the people working there told him that the Field of Dreams movie location was just 3 miles away. That would have been 6 extra miles on the ride today, so he declined. Neptune and I also drove through Dyersville, but didn’t go to the Field of Dreams because I wasn’t sure what the parking was like for an RV. Note- they do have some areas to park for trailers and RVs.
We met up at the Riverview Ridge Campground in Cascade, IA. They have tent as well as RV sites. It is located on the North Fork Maquoketa River and has tubing and kayaking rentals. It would be a great place to go with the kids on a hot, summer day. Neptune has been going crazy digging a hole next to the RV. We’re not sure what was there, but whatever it was it smells delicious to him.
After setting up, we decided not to let opportunity pass by and went back to Dyersville to see the Field of Dreams. We are very glad we did. At first it looked like there was a baseball game going on. But then we realized that people come from all over in their baseball uniforms, with their ball and gloves, to play catch and maybe hit a few and run the bases. They do have items available for you to use if you don’t bring your own. We were able to walk into and out of the corn. It’s the perfect time to visit because the corn is so high and you really do lose people in there quickly.
They have a pub there, The Dugout, and we enjoyed an IPA and some popcorn. They did have hot dogs available, too. Joe thought it would be funny to pretend to choke on one, but I talked him out of it. I reminded him that Moonlight Graham probably wouldn’t be coming to his rescue. The house from the movie was open for tours, but we didn’t go inside. Outside the house were the bleachers and they were perfect for resting and watching the action on the field.
We came back to the airconditioned RV and Neptune. We’re having an early night tonight. It looks like rain tomorrow at least part of the day. It’s a 78-mile ride and we’re hoping it misses Joe when he’s on the bike.
Thank you for your support. We really appreciate all the good words and well wishes 😊
