Climbing Into New Hampshire

Today Joe began his ride at 7:20. Shortly after he started the ride, the climbing started.  He had 4 hills to climb in the first 30 miles.   The first hill was 5 miles up and the descent was very fast and winding. He got up to 44 miles an hour, which is a record for him on this bike.  He was halfway down the descent and he thought a car was behind him because his radar went off, but it turned out to be another cyclist.  She blew by him like he was standing still.  At the bottom of the hill Joe stopped to talk with her and she said she’d gotten up to 50 mph.  She said she is training for the 23rd annual Green Mountain Stage Race.  The Green Mountain Stage Race is a 4 day race and one of the biggest stage races in New England.  It starts next Friday, Aug 29 and ends on Sept 1st. Joe continued on to his 2nd climb and again the descent was winding and fast.  He rolled into NH and commented on what a beautiful ride it was today- wooded, along a river, just a nice ride.

I must agree with the winding roads. We really did travel up and down and around.  I was white-knuckling some of it.  It was a gorgeous trip today with the sun shining and, as Joe mentioned, the scenery was great.  Neptune and I packed up and were off by 11 am. We said goodbye to our neighbors from Massachusetts and hope to see them again.

We’ve made it to North Haverhill, NH and are staying at River Meadow Campground. Joe arrived about 15 minutes before the RV. The camp hosts are super helpful and even gave Joe a shortcut for leaving the park tomorrow.  As Joe said, even a tenth of a mile is something. As we drove to our site, there were some folks grilling corn on the cob.  They told us to park the RV and come on down and get some corn.  The Minnesota State Fair is going on right now and Joe is missing it for the first time in many years.  His favorite food at the fair is the corn on the cob, so this was a perfect treat.  It was delicious! The Connecticut River is flowing past the park and on one side is Vermont and the other is New Hampshire. This is a very popular park for families and there are a lot of kids in the pool and biking around.  We think that this park wins the award for most golf carts.

It was mid 80s this afternoon so we ended up turning the air conditioning on again and mostly spending time inside.  Neptune laid in the sun and dirt, per his usual, but even he ended up coming in and napping after a while.

Joe will be heading out a little earlier tomorrow to conquer some more elevation in NH.  He’ll be biking through the White Mountains. Neptune and I will be following behind with the house.
