Today the rain started about 3 am and lasted most of the day. It was a much-needed rain for the area. But it also meant a missed ride. It was disappointing, especially so close to the end. Neptune enjoyed sleeping in and stretching out on the couch. It was the first time we’d needed to take down in the rain. Thank you to my friend, Cari, for the rain pants recommendation. They were awesome!
We traveled through the beautiful Adirondacks via Hwy 9N North. It was a gorgeous route, even in the rain: the towns, homes, scenery all located along a winding and hilly road. We stopped at a scenic overlook, and we were still looking at Lake George. We had no idea that it was so long.
We traveled to Ticonderoga, NY. It is a beautiful and historic town located between Lake George and Lake Champlain. It is home to Fort Ticonderoga and played an important military role in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. We saw a lot of historical markers. I added some photos of places we saw. If you’re interested in more information, our waitress told us about the Green Mountain Boys and Ethan Allen. Very interesting history and I’d recommend looking into them more. We did not get to the fort as it was getting late in the day, and we had the dog with us.
Not only does it have historical areas, but it also has the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour. It is a museum with “the most accurate rebuild of the original sets” and you can tour the museum here in Ticonderoga, NY.
We set up at our campsite at Brookwood RV Resort. It is a lovely place in the Adirondacks. The camp host told us that when you are traveling through the Adirondacks if you see either a gas station or a restroom, you use them. We can confirm that they are both few and far between. We thought that the western US would be the tough place to find gas stations, but we traveled for a couple hours this morning and didn’t see any so we are taking her advice to heart.
We took a walk with Neptune at Cook Mountain Preserve. We have found that the hiking trails in New York are very well marked with color coded labels depending on which hike you’re on and the labels are placed at short intervals among the trees/path. One of the trails we walked took us to a cemetery that dates to the Civil War. We found only one complete headstone and a few stone remnants. If we didn’t know it was there, we would have walked right by without a clue. Around the preserve, you could see the colors of the trees in the surrounding hills beginning to change.
We drove to the ferry landing that Joe will be using tomorrow to get himself and his bike to Vermont. Neptune and I will be taking the long road. Joe met the captain that will be taking him across tomorrow. The ferry was closed today as they were replacing the cables that guide the ferry across the canal. It should be ready to go by 9 am tomorrow!
We enjoyed dinner down the road from the RV site at Ticonderoga Country Club. Joe had a curry chicken wrap which was delicious. It had a nice view of the hills outside. And it was very relaxed, despite the country club in it’s name.
Tomorrow looks like it will be rain free and we’ll be off to Vermont for a couple nights. Another new state for all 3 of us. The temperature is definitely different, and we’ve been using the heater these last couple days instead of the air conditioner. Great sleeping weather!
