Joe left at 7 am and got on the Erie Canalway Trail for another 5 miles of grey dust. He then headed straight north to get to the shore of Lake Ontario. He battled a 12 miles an hour headwind all day. The only time he wasn’t battling the headwinds was when he was climbing the large hills. He hasn’t seen hills like this since Iowa. Good feeling gone. It was 5 miles shorter than yesterday’s ride, but it took him 45 minutes longer because of the wind and the hills. His legs were beat. He did enjoy riding through a lot of apple and other fruit trees along the shores of Lake Ontario. And he rode past a ton of produce stands and wished he had room to stop and shop. Joe had his second breakfast at a nice park with a picnic table. He took a photo of his bike there. He road down some beautiful roads today and even past a peppermint field.
Neptune and I walked around some of the trails at Red’s Twilight RV Park this morning before heading out. It was only in the mid 70’s so a good time for a long walk. We hiked the Fairy House Walk and it was a lot of fun finding the fairy houses tucked among the trees. I do love a good fairy house. I spoke with the owners about the leaves changing colors. I can’t believe that the fall colors are here, and the leaves are beginning to drop. They said that this has been the hottest and driest summer in the past 10 years and that normally the trees aren’t changing so early. We’ve seen some areas with more than enough rain and some with very little rain this year.
For the next couple nights we’re staying at Sunset Park RV and Cabins in Oswego, NY. It is an amazing spot with only a road separating us from Lake Ontario. It is windy and wavy on the lake today. Neptune and I sat on one of the benches along the lake for a while waiting for Joe. We took a walk in the direction Joe was coming from and ran into him as he turned the corner.
The campsite is right across from Bev’s Dairy Treats. The ice-cream shop has had a steady line of people all day. They have a very wide selection of ice cream flavors, plus sundaes and shakes. Joe got a banana cream pie flavored ice cream and he and Neptune give it 2 thumbs up. It is the perfect summer place to stop and eat your ice cream while sitting on the lake shore. There is plenty of seating.
We walked around the shoreline for a while. Neptune was ok until the waves came crashing in. That means the waves came in and touched his toes. He came back to the drier land and watched Joe enjoying the lake and the rocks. The rocks remind me of the rocks on Lake Superior. Rounded and smooth from their time in the lake. The water was cool and refreshing, not cold.
Joe did some bike maintenance while I read a book. But mostly I enjoyed the lake breeze and the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks. We headed across the street and down a couple of businesses to Rudy’s Lakeside Drive-In for a seafood dinner. They have a large menu of fried seafood, including haddock, and burgers. It’s been open since 1947 and between Rudy’s and Bev’s, you really should stop along this area of Lake Ontario. There is an amazing view and plenty of seating outdoors along the lake. Really a treat that we would highly recommend.
We are looking forward to watching the sunset and the sunrise. It will be gorgeous. It looks like the bike rides will be getting hillier and more similar to the routes that this trip started with. It will be nice to have a day off before heading into the last couple weeks.
