We added some pictures from yesterday of the grain elevators in Brady, MT and the Log Cabin Beer store.
Joe and Bill left today at 7:25 am for a nice, easy 56-mile ride that should have lasted 4 ½ hours. It ended up being a 60-mile ride lasting 6 hours and 40 minutes. All because of that wicked wind from the south. And Garmin directions. They had a 10-12 mph head wind the entire day. “It was horrible”
It was so windy that at one point when they were eating their snacks the Doritos blew away! They enjoyed miles of blue skies and wheat fields, and today’s wildlife scenery included a Black Foot Fox, llamas and eagles, pronghorns and deer and whistle pigs, of course. Joe has a picture of the windmills all lined up which is super cool. We normally see windmills spread out over the land.
Joe got “smogged” by 2 Montana diesels. Which means these *** drove past and gunned their engines so the exhaust ended up in his face. Nice… ☹
They met some good people today. A person from the Montana Department of Transportation was kind enough to intercept them and told them that they are heading toward 3 miles of gravel. He redirected them to a paved road, and they only had to back track 1 mile. And Robert Carne is a veteran and made sure that they were heading the right way on 2nd Avenue in Dutton, MT (established 1909 – a railroad town).
They only saw 1 BNSF train today and they blew the whistle for the bikers.
17 miles from today’s end, they stopped for water and decided to split an iced tea. Joe was thinking of a small cup of tea. They ended up with an almost 2-liter bottle. They enjoyed it and will be saving the bottle to use in the future. They also have some pictures of the dam and path into Great Falls. It was a hot ride today. The ride started out at 50 degrees and was 90 degrees when they made camp.
As for me and Neptune, we got up early and did a bit of RV cleaning and then packed up and were on the road by 9:45 am. We were running early so we stopped at a rest area to walk around a bit. Poor Neptune. I could see him looking around and expecting Joe to show up there. Neptune and I settled into our place at Malmstrom AFB pretty quickly and uneventfully. Once it hit 85 degrees we turned on the AC knowing that the bikers would need a cool place to come back to. Neptune is weird. He loves to lay down in the sun. Even at home he’d lay on the asphalt driveway and sleep. I did force him inside after a bit and he stayed there, happily, I believe, until the bikers arrived.
Once we were together again, we all enjoyed relaxing and a bit of a nap. Later on Joe did some bike maintenance before we all enjoyed our down time. At 4:30 was Retreat and the national anthem (We are on an Airforce Base). Neptune listened and stood at attention. Or he was just watching the prairie dogs running around and planning his sneak attack. Our evening snack included oysters, veggies, hummus and almonds, crackers. And some beers. And Neptune and I will be working on the blog together.
We plan on hiking and shopping at the PX tomorrow! It’s a rest day 😊
