West Wind- Good for Joe, Bad for Bill

Published on 28 June 2025 at 21:00

Today was the day we met up with Bill.  Joe and Bill both traveled Hwy 2.  One from Shelby, MT heading west and one from East Glacier, MT heading east.  We all met up in Cut Bank, MT.

Joe’s ride started before 8 am.  It was all downhill, 18 mile/hour wind on his back, road was flat, wide, clean.  He didn’t even need to pedal.  Had the fastest MPH ever! Will probably never have a ride like that again.  It was epic.  He took some good pictures of the changing land and in one you can barely see a pronghorn.   He actually called me from our new site even before I’d had a chance to pack up and leave from the old site. It was under 3 hours to go 48 miles.

Bill’s ride – the opposite of Joe’s.  Minor grade 28 miles with an 18 mph head wind.  On his ride he saw 32 Minnesota plates, 4 Alaska plates, 2 Pennsylvania, 2 NewYork, 3 Wisconsin, 14 motor bikes, and 1 Ferrari. Bill took a picture as you enter Cut Bank, the local mascot and penguin and the sign: Cut Bank – Coldest Spot in the Nation (when it’s not in Minnesota or …)

We made a new biker friend today, Chris from Germany.  He’s riding solo from Seattle and is on his way to Chicago.  Joe had passed him on the bike earlier today and Bill met up with him at the penguin. We all ended up at the same park.  He declined to join us at the brewery, but did accept a Surly Furious, which he gave a thumbs up.

BNSF is representing again today.  From our campsite we can watch and hear the trains cross a long trestle bridge.  It’s always nice to see that orange engine.

Joe and I and Neptune went on a short walk around the area while Bill napped. There was a trail, but it ended after less than a mile so Neptune did well on today's walk.  The cactus are blooming here.    Our short walk worked out well, because we watched the rain clouds come in and they let loose for a ½ hour while we were safe in our home.

We enjoyed a local beer at Cut Band Creek Brewery.  Another good find on our brewery trip across America (and the biking of course).

We had a great crock pot dinner. Thank you to Nancy for Mississippi Crack Chicken recipe. It was awesome as always.  And we have leftovers for tomorrow.

Tomorrow Joe and Bill will be heading out together to our next stop.  They will be leaving Hwy 2 behind and will eventually parallel I-15.  The ride is over 60 miles, so they may not get there before me tomorrow.  Or they may.  Neptune and I have a checklist and schedule to follow and we can’t be rushed.
